Kinect-ing

It's interesting. I'll get to the interesting part after I tell you about our newest fun thing in the house.

Based SOLELY on a demo of Kinectimals and the upcoming Disneyland Adventures, we bought an XBox and Kinect combo. My counsellor said I could buy one ONLY if we got an "active" game for it - so we got several. And it's a fun way to get some sweat out of you! Although watching me bust a move to "Baby got Back" playing Dance Central is also a great way to laugh your can off!

That being said - this morning I had an interesting experience.

I woke up early - ready to hit the elliptical. And then decided to check in on my weight. I've been working out - eating better (although not always sticking to my 2200 per day) - and generally FEEL like I'm making progress on my health.

And the weight....hadn't moved.

And so I sat there in the bed, watching Sesame Street with Elizabeth - feeling bad about that. And slowly losing the will to exercise. I mean - what's the point right?

But then I realized how BACKWARDS that is.

The only way I'm going to lose this weight is by CONTINUING to exercise and eat properly. Building those habits. One day at a time. So I got off my butt, went downstairs, and did my elliptical workout. They have a "weight loss" program that I use during the week - it's a set 28 minute program with a 5 minute cool down. And it DEFINITELY gets the "shirt soaking" done.

I've been revisiting my goals for 2012 these last weeks in light of my struggles. And I think this is a more realistic goal:

1) Finish January 2012 - no sweeping.

2) Complete all four races that I set out to do - January, Princess (both of which I'm registered for) - Disneyland, and Wine and Dine

3) Get progressively FASTER with each one.

4) Run/jog at least 30-50% of the Wine and Dine.

If I can accomplish them - the weight will HAVE to come in line along the way, right?

EPCOT AWAITS!

  1. We have a Kinect too, it's certainly a good way to get some exercise in without feeling like you're actually exercising (I love dancing!) I wouldn't put too much stock in whatever number your scale throws at you, as you loose weight you're going to gain muscle (assuming you're doing exercises that will help you gain muscle which you probably are) and gaining that muscle can make it seem like you aren't loosing weight when you probably are. My husband is working on getting fit and he's obviously loosing weight (you can see it in his face and his clothes are really loose) but the numbers on the scale aren't really moving a whole lot.

Keep it up, not loosing that motivation is a BIG key and you'll see (and feel) the payoff!

  2. I would also recommend the Wii for exercise games IE Wii Fit. I write a blog about video games and Disney you might be interested in here at http://thefourparksandmore.blogspot.com

  3. I have Kinect, but I have to admit that I don't use it much...although the Disney games make it more likely that I'll jump back in to using it.

I am proud to see that you're not giving up on your race goals for next year, but adjusting based on where you are - that's smart and makes me so proud of you. Don't forget you'll have support at all those races because I'll be there for each of them as well!!!!

Keep the I will succeed if I do the work attitude and you'll see changes. I know that you can do it!

  4. Sometimes it's better to take actual measurements (chest, waist, hip) and monitor that monthly along with the weight. If your clothes start to fit better (or looser), you know you are losing fat and building muscle. A pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat and you are also strengthening your cardiovascular system in the process. The weight loss will come. It's taken me 3 weeks of working out to finally get the scale to move down 2 pounds. You can do it!

  5. Congratulations on not letting the disappointment get in the way of your continuing effort. Worthwhile results often take time.

I did notice you mentioned "not always" sticking to your calorie limit. If that's remaining a problem, remember that a little here and a little there CAN all add up and impede your progress. One relatively easy thing if you're not already explicitly concentrating on it would be to make sure to drink lots of water. Drink a full glass of water before every meal - and perhaps better yet also every snack!!! - as a way of helping yourself feel full and reducing the temptation to eat more than you know you should.

  6. You're beating the mind game! Way to go! :) I hear it's about 80% eating vs working out, so maybe by getting outside of those calories, you're keeping the weight on?
Anyway - I have a Wii and use it A LOT lately for Just Dance 3! I actually have a friend who is in a challenge with me. Deal is whoever gets the highest score at 2/3 songs each week gets $5 put into their paypal account by the loser. :) The rules are - YOU CAN PRACTICE AS MUCH AS YOU WANT TO! So far, it's been great!

  7. The elliptical is your friend. I'm been supplementing my runs with elliptical workouts recently, and seeing results. The elliptical is relatively low impact compared to running, so you can do an hour or so on that daily without killing your joints. That conditioning will flow right into walking/jogging/running.

  8. You posted, "I'm going to post DAILY from 60 days down to 1. I'll be updating you on my exercise, weight, food intake, and plan overall." We're well past the 60 day mark...

  9. That's true, mgreene. I did promise daily updates. However - life has been a little crazy. So I'll be updating everyone tomorrow on where we are and why.
