Medium

Yesterday was an emotional day.

We started with the Harry Potter exhibit - which WAS fantastic. SEE it. Now. Go ahead - I'll wait.

Welcome back.

Last night I took my mother, at her request, to see a psychic medium. Although I firmly believe in the realm of the paranormal and in parapsychological stuff - I always go into situations like this with a healthy dose of skepticism.

I want to thank Ms. Piel for a WONDERFUL reading for my mother. She was able to help my mother put some fears to rest about my father, and genuinely seemed to want to be helpful and kind and compassionate. I was happy to be there as a witness. So much so that I plan on scheduling my own reading at a later time.

Regardless - it was exhausting being there. And it brought up a lot of emotion for me. Hence the blog updating at 3am. Yup - Jonathan can't sleep tonight.

Regardless. I have a nice day with Elizabeth (Amber gets to go get some office work done today) to look forward to, so I'm going to try to get some more sleep.

I will say, on an aside, that I've read Jeff Galloway's running training guides for the Disney races - and I'm definitely using them for future races. Check www.rundisney.com.

Now - suggestions on how to avoid my stitch coming back? I had a few pangs of pain in that same spot yesterday during our science center tour. Not too bad. But still. A little worrysome.

MAIN STREET AWAITS!

  1. Be careful about what and how much you eat in the hours before the race. And don't exceed a pace at which you can easily and comfortably breathe.

I used to get side stitches in my early months of running before I got better at pace control, but now it's been years. If you do get a stitch while running, try slowing your pace a bit - but KEEP MOVING. That's what I used to do and they always went away.

  2. Core training. Core training, core training. No matter how much you do, and do not train the core, you will still get that stitch. When you go to the gym are you hill training??

I understand about the emotional tiredness. I am there. I sure can't seem to get out of it.

When you get that stitch you should be stretching it out.

    I need your input!! :)

  3. Maybe it's the time of year thing? I've been battling exhaustion myself.

  4. I'm with Rae, when I trained core, never had an issue, when I didn't...well...I have tons of issues as it always feels like "pushing it" to your body without the conditioning. That reminds me, I've got to crank this up now in prep for January.

Also, as mentioned, watch the food/fluid thing too much or too little might make a difference for you.

  5. I can tell you to do core exercises too, but I have to admit I haven't been doing them :(...so do as I say not as I do :).

Emotional tiredness is difficult to say the least. I totally understand you there.

I started using Jeff Galloway's training program after the Disneyland Half and so far I really like it. I bought his interval timer and marathon book and there are a lot of helpful things there. I also like that he isn't a huge promoter of running 7 days a week!

Keep going and getting stronger and you'll get rid of the stitch monster.
