31 Days - Runny Bunny

Well my friends - he DID it. 

10.45 miles in 2:42!

I'm really proud of Jonathan! He pushed through some rain, and some pain, and made a huge gain! (hey - maybe I should be rhymey bunny!)

But he did have a problem - and I'm curious what YOU all think about it?

Around his 6-7th mile, his feet started hurting. But he powered through it and just kept on moving forward. By mile 9, he was in pain. And when he got home, his feet really hurt. Right around the balls of his feet (beneath his toes). I've never felt this, having paws and all...but anyhow....

He'd developed a few sensitive pressure points, and a few small blisters (2 per foot). He's treating them with Dr. Scholls medicated blister pads right now, but is worried about the race.

He was wearing good synthetic running socks - does he need ones with more padding in that area? Was it just the rain and humidity?

He was also wearing his good Brooks shoes that he just bought. Does he need to be refit? New shoes? 

It it his form? 

Or just something he'll have to live with and treat as they happen? 

I told him to just hop more instead of walking.

He shrugged it off and took a shower. What do YOU think?

Anyhow - on the GOOD news front - Jonathan had a great week of exercise and eating right - and with today's workout, I officially declare him READY for this half-marathon! Now he's just making himself BETTER for it - but he IS READY. Don't you think?

  1. Congrats! I found that I got more blisters in the summer when I was sweating more, so maybe the moisture from the rain did have something to do with it. Have you worn your new shoes on some shorter runs before today? I usually try to break them in slowly. Just a few things I thought of. Hope your blisters heal fast!

  2. Congrats on the your long jog. I see two possible things that could be affecting your feet.

    First, is simply the fact that you are in longer distances and your feet, legs, and all the rest of you are still adjusting.

    Secondly though, is the fact that you mentioned rain. If your feet got wet then you certainly had some added friction in there.

    Be sure that on your longer runs you are using a product such as Body Glide on your chest & inner thighs, you can even use it on your toes if you like.

    One other thing. Although your feet are uncomfortable right now. Find ways to keep yourself moving in the weeks ahead. Looking back over the past few weeks I know I could have been doing more even with this darn arch issue. I'm paying the price for "sitting on my feather dusters" so to speak.

    Less than a month pal and we are in the world! WOO HOO!!!

  3. Congrats!! That is such a big accomplishment!! Re your feet -- coat your toes with some Vaseline before you put your socks on, and you won't have blisters. I've been doing that all summer, and it really works. My feet were definitely more sore at the higher distances than the lower.

  4. DebWDW makes an excellent comment about Vaseline. I've never used Vaselined my feet before a run though. What I've done is just before bed, I've covered my feet in Vaseline and then put on a old pair of socks (the Vaseline always seems to ruin my socks) and then hit the sack. Then repeat for a couple of days before a long run. You're feet will be so soft and smooth, they won't blister.

    I also have lots of problems with blisters, no matter what I do on race day, I always get blisters so I always tape my feet with athletic tape. It really does the trick even if it does look a bit on the silly side. Although, I would definitely practice a couple of times with taped feet before race day because if you don't do it right it can cause blisters.

  5. After the Minnie 15k, I took my Brooks back to the running shop and had them look at them. They said my shoe was broken down and replaced them.They were still new.I trained in them and they never rubbed before the race.
    Your balls of your feet are going to hurt. You are going to have to get use to the distance. That is when mind over matter comes into play.
    Everyone has great ideas to help from keep getting blisters. Try, that is what training is about.

    You did great. I am so proud of you. Shave off the last 12 minutes and you will have a bag of pins. :)

  6. Thanks for the update, RB! Although I've not had the same issue, Deb has the right idea I thinks. Also agree with Rae that its getting used to the distance. Have had all kinds of weird stuff happen with long run recovery. Still a little sore myself from my long run yesterday. It's all good, tell him he'll be just dandy for the big race ;-)

  8. Congrats on the mileage. Great job!!!

    I agree with Jeff. Start using the body glide everywhere.

    Your shoes should not give you blisters but the rain may have caused the problem.

    If you were wearing new shoes and your feet felt sore (not blister sore but otherwise sore) then your shoes may not be right for you. I can wear my Brooks for 20 miles with no problems (no pain or blisters). I love these shoes.
