295.1

Well - we're back. And I've gained. Five pounds since Friday and about a pound and a half since Monday.

Believe it or not, I'm happy with this.

I learned a few valuable lessons this weekend, but also was able to enjoy a lot of RICH food.

And at the same time got a reminder as to why I don't eat this way all the time - some examples:

Chocolate Fondue
Steamed Whole Lobster
Pastries
Candies
Tea Sandwiches
Hazelnut Gnocchi
Dim Sum

And much more!

But I also did something else.

An OUTSIDE RUN through downtown Victoria. It took about 30 minutes, and I have NO idea how far it was, but it felt GREAT. Except my shoes. The balls of my feet and my shins hurt. So I also know I have to go to a running store.

And I learned that a massage always feels great...until the next day. When your back seizes up and you have difficultly raising your arm above your head. Which is now.

Which is ow.

Which is nasty when you have to prepare for the first day of trial.

But a hot shower is calling.

I'll have a full trip report in the next day or two, and KNOW I'll be undoing the damage I did this weekend - small damage, but well worth the experiences. Trust me. And by Monday we'll be back down. And headed forward.

Oh - and I bought a book. More about this later.

MAIN STREET AWAITS!

  1. Well I am glad you made it outside.Yep it sounds like you need shoes bad.

I am not going to say anything about the gain. :(

  2. Sounds like you had fun. I can understand the vacation indulgence...I am always guilty of the same thing. We just booked a trip to Boston for June, and I've already been looking for restaurants.

I'm glad you liked the outdoor run. I enjoy it much more than the treadmill...but you're right that it is harder on the legs.

Good luck getting back on track. You have piqued my curiosity by mentioning the book. I am anxious to see what you've come up with.

  3. While Rae may not, I may - 5 pounds in 3 days is more than I've put on in 29 years! Just think where you'd be if you didn't keep having these set backs (like this one and the Mousefest week)...

You've been doing really good lately, just have to be careful about relapsing back into old ways.

  4. Jonathan it's great to hear about your run outside. My only advise is since you are going from a treadmill to road slow down your pace till your body adjusts. Part of your shins hurting could be from the wrong pace. Just be careful. I got shin splints a couple of months ago because I went from a treadmill to road and was running at to fast of a pace. My left still flares up from time to time. I will back off the weight because you know what you have to do to get back in gear. Keep moving forward.

  5. mikef is right. Shinsplints are a very common injury for new runners. A lot of it also has to do with shoes. Look at shoes as cheap insurance. Much better to pay $80-100 for a good pair of running shoes than to scrimp and get hurt.

  6. Well, I would say that 5 pounds isn't bad seeing as it sounds like you had a lot of fun on this trip. That's what's important and it also sounds like you stayed on top of things the best you could around your vacation. Can't wait to here the trip report! Oh, and check out my blog post today about the new 101 Dalmatians dvd. I would like to hear your opinion on my review of it. Thanks a lot and looking forward to your next post. Later.

  7. Glad you got outside. Some good comments from Mike and Mike here about that. You will need to make the transition. I am sure Angie will have some advice for you. Clearly you can see the importance of getting outside. Imagine training on only a treadmill and then attempting the Disney Half. Within those 30 min can you imagine how discouraging it would feel to encounter unexpected aches and pain?
I know you have said that getting outside is in the works, please do not be discouraged by you recent outdoor run. Just learn from it and Keep Moving Forward.
